The Meditation Process
Keep these guidelines open and in front of you so you can reference them as you go through your meditation. Don’t worry about opening and closing your eyes to look at the techniques; this is part of meditation. Effortlessly, and in a short while, you will know all 10 meditation guidelines.
You have decided to meditate. The action of your mind now initiates and gives itself permission to meditate. This decision is far-reaching. There is immense power released from the inner core of your mind that will serve you in your meditation journey.
Your posture is your noble presentation of action to what your will has decided. You complement your will when you present yourself with a posture worthy of your meditation. For now, a sitting meditation encompasses that purpose. Let gravity effortlessly bring you into a position of comfort and readiness. You have known gravity all your life.
Because of the immense power that you will sustain and give out during your meditation, you are able to think and bring about intention For instance, decide to have as an intention that the meditation will be good for you. Let it also be good for all people you meet today: may they all have a good day. When you infuse your meditation with an intention, no matter how the meditation goes, there will always be a positive effect as regards the intention attached to the meditation.
When Concentration meets the Will, you are ready. This combination of the power of your will and your concentration is the center point of your direct effort for the travel part of your meditation. These two vibrating entities release the certainty of the presence of mind in the moment. Closing your eyes for your meditation sets up a good state in which to begin using all your power of concentration.
Imagination will create your journey. Your Imagination has the ability (and much more than this) to create space content and flow within your mind. With your eyes closed, imagine opening a door in your mind. Walk through this door and create a comfortable room. Sit in this room in whatever way feels comfortable. Absorb and feel comfortable with your ability to do this. You already know how to see with your mind’s eye. Make the room clear in your mind. The room will appear and disappear during the meditation; it is only a reference point to help your imagination feel and believe in its own certainty.
Your Breathing has the ability, with your permission, to keep you in the present moment. Intentionally breathe in; then, breathe out. Now let your breathing work naturally. Whenever any distractions interfere with your meditation, return to the intentionality of your breathing. This process will bring your meditation back to the neutral position.
In the next series of events, you will use your travel guides for your meditation. The following words you know very well. Now, for the first time, you will use them in a very different way. As you settle in with your breathing, bring within your imagination the word ‘stillness.’ Imagine and say within your mind the word ‘stillness.’ Say it a few times effortlessly. Let the word vibrate within you. You can now still both your body and your mind for a moment. Pause and stay in this moment as long as you like.
When you are ready to move on, there is another word that will complete your travel guide of meditation. Say, within your imagination, the word ‘clearness.’ Say it a few times. Do this a few times until you see the clearness in your mind and body, just for a moment. Repeat the word ‘clearness’ as many times as you like. Use these two words, ‘stillness’ and ‘clearness,’ as you see fit to keep yourself in the traveling aspect of your meditation. Your friend Gravity will show up and be ever-present at this point in your meditation. Welcome it.
There comes a point in your meditation where your mind will to go blank. Neither here nor there will there be any type of sensation, just for a moment. As soon as you think you are at that point, it seems to slip away. This is all good. This is meditation. With practice, this is a great place to be, even for a moment. Now let’s go there. Here’s how. The still point is yours to create. Just for this meditation, let’s create a small, diamond-shaped dot. It gives off a sparkle as you look at it with your mind’s eye. Say the words ‘stillness’ or ‘clearness’ a few times, while maintaining your mind’s eye’s contact with your diamond. Let go and travel into thoughtlessness for as long as you can. When distractions come, this is all okay; this is the cycle of meditation. When you have completed a cycle, go back to your breathing, then return to your orientation words. See the dot, go to thoughtlessness, and return to the cycle of meditation. It is wonderful and captivating to be able to do this and know that you know how to do this.
Within the time frame that you have set for your meditation – for instance, a 20-minute time frame – you will have all of the above work to do in a cycling sequence, plus some distractions, plus some wandering thoughts, plus some other thoughts of what you are doing, plus some craving and frigidness of the body, plus something that you invent yourself. All of this is part of meditation. No one meditation is like any other meditation. Each meditation is new and completely unique.
The you that goes into your meditation is not the same you that comes out of meditation. With this in mind, we complete each meditation with a sense of accomplishment; a sense of renewal, because the real ending of meditation is the beginning of mindfulness. The real effect of meditation is when you are not in meditation and you are in mindfulness. Remember, it is the you meeting the new you.
